Cellular, Molecular and Biomaterials Engineering

Cellular, Molecular and Biomaterials Engineering

Cellular, Molecular and Biomaterials Engineering involves the study how molecular interactions, both inter- and intra-molecular as well as with biomaterials, drive cellular behavior and to develop new engineering approaches to treat, repair and replace human tissues.

The research activities of this group span multiple scales from single molecules and nano-scale engineering to cells, tissues and organ systems toward the development of molecular, cellular and biomaterial/nanomaterials.

Core Competencies
  • Rational engineering and Molecular Evolution of DNA, RNA, proteins, and viruses
  • Elucidation, modeling, and interventional design of  inter- and intra-molecular interactions, enzyme kinetics and cellular signal transduction pathways both chemical and mechanical in nature
  • Optogenetics, nucleic acid editing and nucleic acid therapy
  • Directing cell differentiation through chemical and physical stimuli
  • Stem cell engineering and bioprocessing
  • Development of advanced in vitro models: organ-on-a-chip, microfluidics and high throughput assay systems
  • Biomaterial/Nanomaterials design for molecular diagnostics, delivery of therapeutics, control of cellular responses including immuno-modulation for effective integration into living systems and regenerative medicine
