Eyelid control device

Level - Undergrad

Dr. Andrew Chung, MD/PhD (Georgia Tech alumnus - Class of 1986) has requested help for an individual who has suffered a stroke in the brain stem roughly two years ago. As a result of the stroke, this person no longer has the ability to hold his eye lids open. He does however have the ability to squint and close his eyes if they are being held open. It is believed that if he could obtain the ability to open his eyes that his quality of life would be greatly improved.

The patient’s family has tried using devices used during eye surgery to hold his eyes open. Unfortunately, these devices are not comfortable and they cause the patient’s eyes to become dry because he could not blink with these devices in place. The patient, his family, and doctor are seeking someone to design a device that would hold his eyes open and allow him to blink.
